Walking with the young people: a vital challenge for OFS
St. Francis and the youth of today
Fr. Alfred Parambakathu OFMConv.

General Introduction

The year of 2018 saw the Universal Church living a Synod of Bishops dedicated to the theme “Young People, Faith, and vocational Discernment”, held in Rome from 3 to 28 October. The main purpose of the Synod was, as seen in the Instrumentum laboris (Art.1), to reemphasize the fact that, Taking care of young people is not an optional task for the Church, but an integral part of her mission in history. In just a few words, this is the specific scope of the upcoming Synod: just as our Lord Jesus Christ walked alongside the disciples of Emmaus (cf. Lk 24: 13-35), the Church is also urged to accompany all young people, without exception, towards the joy of love.

Sing to the Lord a new song +
because He has worked wonders (Ps 97:1a-b).
He has sacrificed His Beloved Son with his right hand +
and holy (is) His arm (Ps 97:1c-d).

The Lord has made known His salvation +
in the sight of the nations He has
revealed His justice (Ps 97:2).

On that day the Lord commanded His mercy +
and at night His song (Ps 41:9a-b).
This is the day, which the Lord has made +
let us exult and be glad in it (Ps 117:24).

(St. Francis of Assisi: Officium Pas Domini, Psalm IX.)

We wish you a
blessed Holy Easter
filled with the grace of the risen Christ!

The Secular Franciscan Order (OFS) is celebrating the 800th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Umiliana de’ Cerchi, a Franciscan tertiary who lived and died in Florence, Italy (1219-1246). She was proclaimed blessed in 1694.

World Meeting of Families in Ireland 2018
“The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the world”

The Pope chooses the theme for each World Meeting of Families. With the selection of the “Gospel of the Family: Joy for the world” as the theme of the ninth World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland, the Pope invited us to reflect on a theme that was central to the synodal process that caused him to write the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia: On the Love of the Family.

Dear OFS and YOUFRA brothers and sisters,
Peace and all good:
In this material that we are sending to all fraternities, we continue proposing what was assumed as a priority in the 2014 General Chapter that invites us "to include the meaning of sexuality and the sacrament of marriage in all formation programs of the OFS and YouFra. "
