THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FAMILY FOR THE OFS AND FOR THE YOUFRA

THE FAMILY IN THE RULE AND GENERAL CONSTITUTIONS OF THE OFS
Fr. Martín Bitzer, OFMConv

Introduction

The fact that a rule so small as that of the Secular Franciscans devotes an entire article (17) to the family, tells us of the importance of family in the life of a Secular Franciscan.1
The family is an essential part in the "form of life" of every Secular Franciscan. The OFS Constitutions reaffirm this idea when they say: “Secular Franciscans should consider their own family to be the first place in which to live their Christian commitment and Franciscan vocation.” (Const. OFS 24.1)
This article has two parts. In the first we present the text of the Rule which speaks of the family and we offer our comment about it.
Considering, then, that the General Constitutions of the OFS are the application of what is contained in the Rule in its details, we think that only reading the texts constitutes the best commentary on what the family is as contained briefly in the Rule. And so we decided to quote the texts of the Constitutions dealing with the topic without giving an explanation.

The National Fraternity of the Czech Republic has celebrated its National Elective Chapter in Velehrad, the Czech Republic on 5 – 6 June, 2015.The new national minister is Hana Brigita Reichsfeldova and Marie Magdalena Janackova was elected as international councillor.

“Live a life worthy of the calling you have received!” (Ephesians 4,1)

In 2012 the OFS and YouFra had their first joint European congress in French town of Lisieux, famous for Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. It was a kind of historic moment because it was the first time to have a meeting like this between the OFS and YouFra, although YouFra have had its five congresses up to then. One of the things decided on this Congress was to continue the same path together and to organize the Second European OFS-YouFra congress in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015. Thus the National fraternity of Bosnia and Herzegovina started to organize this congress which will be held 17-23 August 2015 in Mostar.

The slogan of the Congress will be “Live a life worthy of the calling you have received!” (Ephesians 4,1) and will deal with different aspects of our call. It is expected around 200 representatives of OFS and YouFra fraternities from all around the Europe and some members of the CIOFS Presidency. The main parts of the program have already been defined and pre-registration for participation started. We plan to visit a known Marian shrine in Međugorje and also the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, called the European Jerusalem because of the coexistence of three religions and different cultures.

The hosting OFS and YouFra fraternity of Bosnia and Herzegovina are honoured to be hosts of the Second European Congress of OFS and YouFra and rejoice for the arrival of brothers and sisters from Europe. Let us pray for the success of this Franciscan gathering!
