Press Briefing

73 chapter members began work today at the 15th General Chapter of the OFS. The Chapter opened yesterday with Mass presided over by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

The Chapter comes half-way through the present sexennial (2014 – 2020), an opportunity for the international OFS fraternity to review the situation of the Order at its different levels, while assessing progress in the implementation of current priorities and objectives.

In his homily, Cardinal Parolin exhorted Secular Franciscans to be “more closely united to Christ”, since this was “the essential foundation of any apostolic community and vision, as well as the guarantee that pastoral planning will be effective”.

The opening celebrations continued today with Mass presided over by Fr. Michael Perry, the OFM Minister General, who spoke of the need for “leadership based on identity, on the experience of Jesus”, but which at the same time must be “dynamic, relational and create partnerships”.

The work of reviewing the state of the Order began with presentation of various Reports. Tibor Kauser, Minister General of the OFS, recognized that the number of Secular Franciscans is declining, and warned that “we cannot deny the problem of lack of interest and failure to promote the OFS and Jufra”, although “we also see many encouraging signs in many national fraternities”.

In his turn, Fr. Amando Trujillo, President of the Conference of General Spiritual Assistants (CAS), highlighted “the incorporation of the Assistants in the work of the Presidency”, and pointed to a number of challenges needing attention, such as “the lack of knowledge of the identity and mission of the OFS among many Franciscan friars”.

The 15th Chapter is being held at a specially emotional time, being the 25th anniversary of the death of Manuela Mattioli, the first Minister General of the OFS.

Dear Brothers Today,

the 26th October, 2017, Kenya is once again returning to the polls to elect a President, after August’s election was annulled by the Supreme Court.

This is a very difficult moment for this beautiful country. The headquarters of OFM’s East Africa province is located here in the country’s capital, Nairobi.

LIVING THE FRANCISCAN CHARISM IN TODAY'S WORLD

40 years after the Seraphicus Patriarch

“The Lord gave me brothers and sisters” (cf. Test. 14):

The secular Franciscans and the gift of fraternity

Fr. Alfred Parambakathu OFMConv

Introduction

From May 29 to June 2 was held a “Capitolo generalissimo” of all the Franciscan families of Umbria to commemorate the fifth centenary of Itevos. The “prophecy of fraternal communion” is what has been experienced and activated in Foligno, in the knowledge that there is no truth, nor Christian credibility in a spirituality that does not become fraternal communion[1]. It would mean that we Franciscans have yet a long way to walk on the footprints of Francis. The present study is a humble attempt to understand the meaning of fraternal bonds in the life of a secular Franciscan.First we will go through the life and Writings of Francis and then will take up the Rule and Constitutions of OFS.

The OFS National Fraternity of Cape Verde has celebrated its National Elective Chapter from 30 June to 2 July 2017. The new national minister is Orlando Burgo and the international councillor is Adilson José de Pina.

The OFS Regional Fraternity of Hong Kong - Macau has celebrated its Elective Chapter on 2 July 2017. The new regional minister is Teresa Wong.

Christ chose to be born and grow up in the bosom of the holy family of Joseph and Mary. The Church is nothing other than "the family of God." From the beginning, the core of the Church was often constituted by those who had become believers "together with all [their] household."cf Acts 18.8 When they were converted, they desired that "their whole household" should also be saved.cf Acts 16:31; Acts 11:14 These families who became believers were islands of Christian life in an unbelieving world.
